The day after…

Yesterday was my toughest day on this Giro so far, I hope it was the last one. Still paying off from the crashes and from two really hard stages, where I went over myself, known faces give on the track give you the strength from which you suffer few days later. After rest day I really didn’t felt good, and was fighting all in to the finish line – not for the win, but to stay in the race, suffering. I hope this was the last time, because we have a lot of work to do in the last week. Steven is outstanding and this gives us extra power to fight for the pink. Day by day and lets see, where this will take us.

Maglia rosa

Imamo roza majico vodilnega, neverjetno!
Almost done with the third and last rest day of the Giro. We have the maglia rosa, incredible! Yesterday I rode reserved in the MTT, because I want to recover from the crashes on Thursday. That was definitely not possible on Friday and Saturday, the profiles of the stages were scary already on the paper. On Sunday it was an honor to see familiar faces cheering, thank you. And now – the hardest part of the Giro – the last week. We have the pink jersey and Steven is in excellent form, and we are going to fight for pink, day by day, to get this jersey to Turin!

Hvala!

Hvala in vsa čast moji, Slovenci! In posebna zahvala mojim bivšim sotekmovalcem, skakalcem, kaj takega, norci!!!! RTV poročila 😀
Better late than ever, I was saying to myself all the way – just survive to the top of the Matajur, and for real it was worth it – I had goose pumps, when I saw how many people are standing beside me and supporting me.  If there wasn’t that climb I would me still in the disco group! Unforgettable, thank you, Slovenians! And a special thanks to my former teammates, ski jumpers, what a surprise!!!

Down again…

Eh ja, znani slovenski šlager gre : »Gate na glavo in dva svinčnika v nos, moj angel sreče je pač lačen in bos.« Moj je še moker, potolčen in krvav.
Yeah, there is well known Slovenian song that goes : »My angel of luck is hungry and bare foot.« Well mine is beside that wet, bruised and bloody. It was raining from the first meter of the start, we were completely wet and frozen, when I came to the feed zone, hit the bidon on the floor, I didn’t hold the handlebars very firmly, reaching for a food bag and bam I am on the ground. I brake the handlebars, change the bike, then I push hard behind the car, trying to get back to the peloton ASAP, but didn’t expect roundabout so quickly and so slippery that I am on the floor again, this time on the other side. In 500m I changed 2 bikes. There is not much to say, on both sides of my body I added new scars on my list, I am counting on support tomorrow to get to the summit somehow…..

Eppur si muove – Earth is turning in her own way and we are still turning the pedals on the Giro. Sundays TT took a lot of power out of me, as well did the ceremonies, that I am not used to – although I hope I will get a chance to recapture those feeling a couple more times in the future. Rest day is always over very quickly, it was the same on Monday. Instead of alarm in the morning I was woke up by doping control. Yesterday’s stage was really hard and long, had to change my bike again, because battery in gearbox went empty, after yesterday’s stage I didn’t feel very well.  But since everything is turning around us, I had to push the pedals for even longer, today. 220 k long stage with a very technical finish, well I had some luck today, I was able to avoid the big crash of the bunch on the left side (link), the peloton has split and we stayed behind. Steven is doing really well and in the coming days we will try to do everything that stays on top! Glad that we are one stage closer to Slovenia. 😀

Chianti Classico

It is hard to believe that this is Giro d`Italia and that I am the one that is today on Winners podium. The day didn’t started well for me, at 9 o clock I went to check the course, it was raining, that last U corner before the finish line didn’t impress me either.  The usual warm up and procedures before the start and the time was quickly 13:20.  Only 2 minutes to start when I leave for the ramp, and the race commissar tells me that my bike is too long. WHAT?! As usual in those situations, there is no one from my team, finally I find the team car and sports director gives me a spare bike, I arrived at the start line 20 seconds before I start. Then I realized, the saddle is too low, I don’t have any bottles, and I am cursing. You are really out of luck Rogla, I say to myself. . In that moment there I only wanted to survive the TT, safely through the corners. At approximately 10 k of the race, my Pioneer (meter) flies from my handlebars and hits the ground. I tried to show to my team car that I have lost something, but had no luck with that either.  I was angry and felt good on the climb, and since I’ve lost the meter I had to go all in, ful gas. At the end I suffered and thought that I will break the handlebars….Died! I was fast enough to run away before the heavy rain.  The waiting for the results was long and stressful, but I couldn’t change anything at that point anymore and it turned out to be very well done. That was the longest TT I ever did in my life, I don’t mind being on top, and once again I got the confirmation that fight till the ens is always a good decision, tomorrow luckily there is a rest day, but the plan for the next stages stays the same – fight fight fight! Thank you for the congratulations, and one more thing:  the picture is taken few years back, when I started one of my first recreational climbs. In a way that is where my road started on a borrowed MTB and it is very good to see, what fascinating things life sets for you, if you are brave enough to take the road. I have better equipment now, that is sure! 😀

Knock knock

Well, great start of the day, knock knock on the door at 7:30, doping control, it takes extra long today, and few minutes till 9 Iam running towards the bus, which leaves at 9, with breakfast in my hand, because I did not have time to eat! Maybe running is too strong expresion, because I walk like I am 200 years old. A doubtful intro for the longest stage of the Giro. After 233k, I arrived safely to the finish, I could not expect more from my beaten legs, although it seems to me, that it is getting better. Slowly I will be less swollen, tomorrow uphill summit!

stage 4, auch

4 down; 17 more to go!
Jutri 233km!
First stage after Sunday crash, 200k in Italy, very long, hard and painful stage;I am happy that I’ve come to the finish. I hope that slowly, step by step it will get better, everything on my body hurts, and I’m turning blue like Papa Smurf! Anyway; there is no way I’m giving up! Tomorrow 233k!

50 shades of pink

I guess I could find more suitable day for this blog entry, but you can forgive me a bit, because I am on the road for at least a month, and will be at least one more. 🙂 From altitude training in Tenerife we flew directly to the Tour de Yorkshire to find the right speed for the Giro, England waited us in cold and snow, but it did ended well for my team; with a win and a second place. Then we just moved to the Netherlands, which welcomed us in pink! : D On Wednesday doping control for all teams, Team presentation on Thursday in front of amazing crowd, with all the effects from the theater, the tension was escalating as it should. Friday, I am on the start of my first Grand Tour, at 16:09, I am thinking when I am putting the number on my jersey.
In front of the velodrome the temperature is rising –  there are people in pink T shirts, taking pictures with the Giro trophy. It is so crowded around our bus, people are sitting in the soft green grass in front of the big screen, eating burgers, and the tents with drinks ran out of beer a long time ago. I would do that to, I say to myself.
But, instead of getting a frankfurter, I stand on a pink ramp in Omnium. The moment of truth.  I was thinking all the time about getting safely through the corners, I didn’t hear most of the instructions, because the crowd was crazy. I’d be lying, if I would say that I haven’t surprised even myself. The rest of the story is known, one hundredth is really not a lot, yet it was Tom in pink; However, to be honest, I don’t even know if pink fits me…:) Today, however, the crash was in front of me, and I flew over the handlebars, At first I could not breathe, I  am bruised all over my body – I’ve been worse, but I was also much better. One of my teammates waited for me, we dragged ourselves to the finish line, otherwise I do not know how I would finish. They say that the one that never fought is truly defeated, so I am staying optimistic about the next days; although the 10K ride to the finish was like the route of suffering. When I type this I am covered with ice, to relieve the pain, I will not sleep today, that is sure, and thinking about that, in our sport you are often defeated and on the ground (literally), a Chinese proverb says that greatness lies in the act of always picking yourself up and not that you never fall… Ah grande Giro – one day you are almost maglia rosa, the next day you hit the ground.
